The Case Study of Prescribed Exercise for Obese Adults

Abstract
The purpose of this case study is to understand the effects of behavior, diet and exercise therapy on the physique and fit-ness of obese adults with hypertension and musculoskeletal disorder. The subject of this study is a 54-year-old female on hypertension medicine who was experiencing difficulty with everyday activities due to patellofemoral pain syndrome and shoulder Calcific tendinitis caused by weight increase. When she came to the hospital in March 2006 her BMI was a waist circumference of 94cm and 40.4% body fat, placing her in the highly obese category; abdominal CT tests showed that she has low muscular visceral fat type. A blood test showed a high cholesterol of 226mg/dl. Before beginning exercise, she was tested on physical fitness test. After that, she met with medical staff, nutrition counseling and exercise counseling once every week for 10 months to adjust her daily life rou-tine, and did aerobic and resistance training 5 times a week. After 10 months of exercise, weight had been reduced by 13.6kg and body fat reduced by 12.2kg for a reduction of 12.5% in body fat ratio. BMI and waist circumference were in the normal range, having been reduced 5.4kg/m2 and 17.3cm respectively. Cardiopulmonary endurance, flexibility, physical endurance, balance increased significantly. The patient was able to achieve her target weight through 10 months of life habit improvement and steady exercise and has maintained her weight since. She no longer feels discomfort in her daily life from knee and shoulder joint pain.
